Torii

A torii is a traditional Japanese gate often found at shrines and temples. There are several different types of torii, but their basic structure consists of two pillars and a beam. Wood is the most commonly used material for these gates. The first studies for our chair already revealed a formal similarity between the side view of the piece — legs and arms — and the traditional gate, which inspired its name. Important characteristics of the Torii chair are the conciseness of its design and the precise use of wood. The shapes and dimensions of each profile are carefully designed to best fulfill their functions — round and solid for the legs, oblong and wider for proper arm support, and more delicate for the crossbars connecting the legs and the backrest. The result is a construction that is both light and sturdy. Upholstered seat and backrest ensure the comfort of the Torii chair.
